the goodbyes you never knew

One day, you'll realize that some of the biggest goodbyes in your life happened without you knowing they were goodbyes.

One day, you'll realize that some of the biggest goodbyes in your life happened without you knowing they were goodbyes. The last time someone carried you to bed, half-asleep, without you even stirring enough to remember it—gone before you were old enough to know it was happening for the last time. The last time your whole family sat around one table without an empty chair, without someone missing, without the quiet awareness that these gatherings don't last forever. The last time you called someone just because, before you started weighing every call against their time, wondering if you were bothering them. The last time you walked through a childhood house that still felt like yours, before it belonged to someone else's family and someone else's memories. You'll sit with this list and feel the specific ache of never having gotten to choose any of these endings, never having gotten the closure a proper goodbye offers. And that's the cruelty you'll finally understand fully: life doesn't send a warning before the last time. It just lets the moment pass like every other moment, ordinary and unremarkable, until one day you look back and realize it was the only one of its kind you'll ever get.
