the slow fade

One day, you'll realize that some people didn't leave your life all at once.

One day, you'll realize that some people didn't leave your life all at once. There was no fight, no dramatic goodbye, no single moment you could point to and say "that's when it ended." It happened so gradually you didn't notice it happening—a text that took a day longer to answer, then two, then a week; a phone call that used to last hours now finishing in ten polite minutes; plans that kept almost happening until they simply stopped being suggested at all. You'll think back to a version of this friendship where you talked every single day, where you couldn't imagine a serious life update happening without them knowing first, and you'll try to locate the exact conversation that was the last real one—not the last text, not the last "happy birthday," but the last conversation that actually felt like the two of you. You won't be able to find it. It will already have happened months, maybe years ago, disguised at the time as just another ordinary check-in, nothing that announced itself as significant. That's the particular grief of this kind of ending: there's no closure to hold onto, no goodbye to replay, just a slow fade you only recognize in hindsight, once the person who once knew everything about you has quietly become someone you'd have to reintroduce yourself to.
